The Portland Society of Natural History was incorporated in 1850, succeeding the earlier Maine Institute of Natural Science. During its active period, members included Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Commodore Robert E. Peary. The collection of the Society was originally amassed through the donation or purchase of private collections and rivaled any others on the East Coast. Arthur Norton was a geographer, botanist, mammalogist, ornithologist, author, and editor. Born in St. George, Maine, on April 19, 1870, he was the son of Horace F. and Cynthia Elwell Norton. In 1905 he became curator of the Portland Society of Natural History, serving in that position for 37 years. Horace Foster Norton was born on Whitehead Island, Me., where he was in charge of the life-saving station and engaged in farming and fishing.
